Psychotherapy and Shamanism: The past twenty years have brought a renaissance of interest in shamanism among Westerners, as we press up against the limitations of our rational, scientific and technological approaches to health and healing. Shamans are the keepers of a remarkable body of ancient methods that both foreshadow and go beyond Western psychology, medicine and spirituality. Shamanic methods are strikingly similar the world over, even for people who are culturally unrelated and geographically diverse. With practice these methods are accessible to most people. Through experiential exercises, workshop participants will learn to shift their awareness to the “shamanic state of consciousness” and thus gain access to an expanded reality that some have likened to Jung’s archetypal realm. Through lecture and discussion, participants will also examine how the psychological phenomena of depression, dissociation and introjects respond to advanced shamanic techniques such as soul retrieval and extraction, and how Western psychotherapy and shamanism can complement one another in healing work. Workshop participants will learn how to do a shamanic journey and will learn how journeys can be an effective method of supervision. This workshop is open to those who are new to shamanism as well as those that are familiar with shamanic journeying. This is an introductory workshop that may extend into an on-going training group.
